Finding Your Personal Compass in Life

I lived abroad half of my life, building deep friendships and working with people from various countries and backgrounds. Through these experiences, I realized that there are countless personal compasses in the world. Everyone carries their own values and standards influenced by their upbringing environment, culture, religion, education, etc.

In encountering different personal compasses that shape how each person perceives the world around them and what is good or bad, I learned to accept that others have different compasses from mine, and that I should not judge nor deny theirs based on my own.

These experiences prompted fundamental questions in my mind: What exactly is my personal compass? What are my ways of viewing and interpreting things around me? What are my important values and believes, as well as biases and prejudices?

In pursuing the answers, I came to believe that a personal compass is not just about one’s sense of values, but also realizing one’s own way of being.

What is it that’s truly important to me and my life?

What does happiness mean to me?

How do I want to live my life?

How do I want to “be”?

With the help of coaching, I asked myself these questions countless times to find my own compass that determines my views of the world, my happiness and my own way of being.

Coaching gave me the courage to be my authentic self that is not guided by how others perceive me but by my own values and vision. Coaching also gave me decisiveness to say no to what I don’t need or want. I have become more open to others’ and my own emotions, as well as to the small moments of happiness that fills up my heart each day.

We live in the era of information abundance that expose us to countless norms, perspectives, judgements, identities and ways of living. We are constantly choosing to filter in and internalize some of them based on our internal compasses, whether consciously or unconsciously. At the same time, values such as diversity, inclusion, and coexistence are increasingly important in our complex society.

Personal compass is like a navigational tool, helping us choose what is truly important, live our life with purpose, and identify our own way of being and happiness, while celebrating the colorful and diverse world that we live in. It is high time for each one of us to identify our own compass.

We all have lifelong questions in the back of our mind: How can I live my life feeling fulfilled each day? The answers are always inside us, and only we can find them. The key is to identify our own happiness and way of being—the personal compass in our heart.

Are you curious about exploring your deep self and discovering your personal compass that lies within, and how it can help you live a happy and fulfilling life? Coaching has the power to do so in the journey to embrace your true self, and meet your new self.
